Experiencing trauma can have a long-lasting effect on both physical and mental health. This webinar, the first in a series of three, will review the scope and types of trauma and how they intersect with health and healthcare for women and birthing people. It will introduce the learner to the concepts of trauma-informed care (TIC), the basic principles of delivery of TIC and the benefits of incorporating TIC in various systems, and include the role of cultural humility.

This program will build on the knowledge gained in the other two webinars of the series to develop a comprehensive understanding of how experiencing intimate partner violence (IPV) affects health, in particular perinatal health and outcomes. The webinar will discuss the intersection of IPV and healthcare utilization and review the concepts of cultural humility and the SAFE framework as essential aspects of caring for people who have experienced IPV.

The education and support that new parents receive during the first few days postpartum play a significant role in breastfeeding outcomes. Given that 60% of lactating parents stop breastfeeding sooner than they planned, the role of healthcare providers to provide the skills and confidence during the first few days of lactation is critical. This presentation will review the basics of supporting new parents and newborns to initiate breastfeeding.
