When they do, they encounter unique forms of stigma, discrimination, and legal challenges. This webinar, based on the Creating safe care: supporting pregnant and parenting patients who use drugs toolkit, aims to equip healthcare providers with the knowledge and tools they need to support pregnant and parenting people who use drugs, aiming to render reports made to child welfare services a last resort. It highlights the health and social needs of pregnant and parenting people who use drugs, and offers strategies grounded in racial equity, compassion, and harm reduction principles. The education and support that new parents receive during the first few days postpartum play a significant role in breastfeeding outcomes. Improper positioning and latching may contribute to breastfeeding cessation and supplementation. Given that 60% of lactating parents stop breastfeeding sooner than they planned, the role of healthcare providers to provide the skills and confidence during the first few days of lactation is critical. This presentation will review the basics of supporting new parents and newborns to initiate breastfeeding.
